Under pressure, U. of Iowa lowers hospital parking fees

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Next time you visit the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, you may notice a change in parking fees.

Officials tell KWWL that improvements are coming and will be effective on January 13. Those include:
  • The first 30 minutes will now be free -- an increase from 15 minutes.

  • The rate for minutes 31-60 will now be 60 cents -- a decrease from 90 cents.

  • Each hour after will cost $1.20. This rate is the same as before.

  • Maximum daily rate, with validation, will now be $10 -- down from $18.

  • Parking will be free, with validation, at the Hawkeye Commuter Parking lot for patients, families and visitors.

  • The University will offer a new, three-day discounted ramp pass for $27.
UIHC and the UI Parking and Transportation Department collaborated on these changes.

The changes come after a couple of KWWL stories in December looked at the high rates of parking.

A gloomy and rainy afternoon didn't stop people from making it out early to the campgrounds Friday. By the afternoon, Scales Pointe Campground and Marina in North Liberty, was full of RVs, tents, and houseboats ready to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. "We don't worry about the weather.
