Fundraiser to help replace stolen wheelchairs

Posted: Updated:
MARION (KWWL) - SportAbility of Iowa held a fundraiser at the Pizza Ranch in Marion to help replace their wheelchairs stolen in December.

The group had about a dozen of their wheelchairs stolen from a trailer in Cedar Rapids, but tonight the people are rolling up their sleeves to help.

Members bussed tables as customers left donations and tips.

Pizza Ranch allowed SportAbility to have 10-percent of Wednesday's sales,  plus all tips collected.

Although Pizza Ranch hosted the fundraiser to help SportAbility, members say the community's support has been amazing, but they're still coping with their wheelchairs stolen.

"Yes, we're not going to get our full amount back tonight, but it's going to be the biggest help we can get right now," said Tasha DeGrotte, Miss Wheelchair Iowa. "That's why we're able to do these so often, and pushing them to happen so often."

They will alternate between the Marion and Cedar Rapids Pizza Ranch restaurants.

The fundraiser was not the only one, the Waterloo Black Hawks games in Cedar Rapids and Waterloo raised about $4300.
