JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -
A recent University of Iowa law school graduate has decided to run for office.
John Zimmerman announced Wednesday that he'll be running as a Democrat for Johnson County Attorney.
Zimmerman is a former pastor who believes in working towards social justice. He told KWWL he's running because he has problems with the way the criminal justice system works in Johnson County.
"Johnson County has a big problem with over-prosecution," said Zimmerman. "They really push too hard on a wide variety of cases, including victimless crimes, and frankly a lot of crimes involving people of color."
Current Johnson County Attorney Janet Lyness is also a Democrat and will also be running. She's held the position since 2007 and worked for the office before that.
