IOWA CITY (KWWL) -
Happy birthday! The Iowa National Guard turned 175 Tuesday.
The guard held a celebration at the Old Capitol in Iowa City complete with birthday cake---they even used a saber to cut it! The guard has participated in every major U.S. conflict since the Mexican War of 1846.
Since the beginning guard soldiers and airmen have served by the values of loyalty, duty, and respect among others.
"Those are all things that Iowa Guard soldiers and airmen have been doing the entire time and it kind of goes back to that good, Midwest way of thinking," said Captain Brandon Cochran.
There are currently 9, 200 men and women serving in the Iowa National Guard.
