Cold cars bring big business for jump starts

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - One common theme during this cold snap? Many people found out Monday that their cars wouldn't start.

It meant long delays for service as towing companies saw one of their busiest days of the year.

The phones were ringing off the hook at Ray Mount Wrecker Service in Waterloo Monday.

"All weekend, we've been very, very busy, especially today," said manager Connie Mount. "A lot of attempted starts, a lot of towing, a lot of semi calls."

She's inside.

Brian Steen is outside.

He tried jump starting cars but the conditions made it too cold to work.

"This is my third one today," said Steen. "I've towed all three of them."

Wrecker services like Ray Mount have seen 4-5 hour waits for customers.

The problem, they say, is it's just too cold. Prevention could have helped, but now that it's this cold, not much can be done.

In this case, the car's owner said she luckily didn't have to work, so it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.

Back at the office, the phones are still ringing.

"My recommendation is, don't go out unless you have to," Mount said. "Just stay home."

For some, there's no choice.

Mechanics say the best defense against the cold is preparation.
