UPDATE: McCaffery suspended for Wisconsin outburst

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (AP) -

The Big Ten Conference has suspended coach Fran McCaffery and fined the University of Iowa for an outburst that got the coach ejected from Sunday's loss at No. 4 Wisconsin.

McCaffery was called for back-to-back technical fouls and tossed from the game for arguing with officials with 12 minutes left, helping the Badgers rally for a 75-71 win.

McCaffery apologized for his emotional reaction and says he has great passion and respect for the game and regrets that his actions put the program and the University of Iowa in a negative light.

Despite the apology, the Big Ten Conference announced on Tuesday that McCaffery would be suspended for the January 9 home game versus Northwestern and fined the University of Iowa $10,000.

The Big Ten says McCaffery, who apologized for the second time in as many days, violated the conference's sportsmanship policy.

Assistant coach Kirk Speraw will take his place on the bench for the Northwestern game.

Thursday was scheduled to be Fran McCaffery bobblehead night, that promotion has been moved the January 19 game against Minnesota.
