Cedar Valley shelters near capacity in cold snap

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - People with the Salvation Army in Waterloo say the shelters are filling up fast.

On Friday afternoon, 12 adults and 13 children found a temporary home at the women's shelter in Waterloo.

"Just my car walking to the office is strenuous enough," said David Rainey, social service coordinator for the Salvation Army.

Rainey said at any given point in time there are between 800 and 900 homeless people in the Cedar Valley.

The Salvation Army has shelters with 52 beds.

"Here in America, if one person goes to bed without something to eat or without a roof over their head, that's one too many," said Rainey.

Rainey said he hopes people and churches open their doors during the forecasted frigid temperatures to help those in need.

"Just open your doors to the people in this time, and I promise you, you'll get rewarded for it," he said.

Rainey said the Salvation Army is always looking for the "comforts of home."

He said, aside from monetary donations, the shelters could use everything from personal hygiene items, coats, gloves, food and blankets.

Donations can be made at your local Salvation Army shelter.
