CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - A Marion woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted murder after the shooting of a Cedar Rapids man on Friday.

Mariah Lynn Sprous, 19, of Marion, was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted murder, according to the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

Sprous is currently being held at the Linn County Correctional Center.

Attempted murder is a class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

Police say Sprous shot Garrett Chmelicek, 21, of Cedar Rapids, on Friday. Chmelicek was reportedly still recovering at a hospital and officials had no condition update.

Police in Cedar Rapids police continue to investigate an overnight shooting that left one man injured.

Sergeant Cristy Hamblin says that while officers were en route to 5620 Johnson Avenue SW for a report of shots fired just after 1 a.m., they pulled a vehicle over in the 2700 block of Johnson Ave NW and found a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the torso.

The driver was taking the victim to the hospital, which Hamblin says happens more often than you may think.

"We've either been in route and found the victim taking themselves up there or we are there, we find multiple victims that we find them at the scene, we find them in route, and we even find them at the hospital," said Hamblin.

Officers called an ambulance. The driver of the car did not receive a ticket.

Police were unable to do an in-depth interview at the time due to the victim's injuries. He is OK and investigators plan to interview him Friday evening. After that interview they hope to have a description of the suspect or suspects.

"If anyone in the apartment complex saw, heard anything, if they happened to be outside of the apartment complex if they saw or heard anything, please call the police department," said Hamblin. "We want to hold the people accountable."

If you have any information, contact Cedar Rapids police or Linn County Crime Stoppers.

You can call 1-800-CS-CRIME (272-7463) or send a text message to CRIMES (274637). In the message/subject, type 5227 and your tip. If your information leads to an arrest, you may be eligible for a reward.
