Dubuque carpenter builds backyard ice rink

A Dubuque carpenter built an ice rink in his backyard and these frigid temperatures are helping to maintain it.

This is the second year Doug Lloyd has built a 32 foot by 72 foot ice rink in his backyard. He said when he was younger, his father built an outdoor hockey rink for him and his brothers.

"He built us an outdoor rink one year," Lloyd said. "Just living here and looking at my backyard. I thought to myself this would be perfect for a rink."

Lloyd said this year construction began on the ice rink in November. The backyard rink is made with 10,000 gallons of water and even is equipped with lights so family and friends can skate day or night.

"I have a couple of nephews that play hockey and I think they need the ice time and it's for the big kids also. We love it and we just have fun." Lloyd said Thursday night.

Molly O'Neill lives next door to Lloyd. She said when she first found out he was creating an ice rink she couldn't believe it.

"I didn't believe it. I'm like a hockey rink in a backyard? I was kind of surprised but it's awesome. It is so much fun to have it back here."

Lloyd said his backyard ice rink is only open to friends and family.
