Joe Pavelski named to 2014 U.S. Olympic hockey team

Former Waterloo Black Hawk player Joe Pavelski will skate for the United States Olympic Team in Sochi for the 2014 Winter Games.

The roster for the 2014 team was announced on Wednesday immediately following the NHL Winter Classic which was held at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Plover, Wis. native was a forward for the Waterloo Black Hawks from 2002-2004.

Pavelski is in his eighth season in the NHL, currently playing for the San Jose Sharks. He has 16 goals and 21 assists this season.

This will be Pavelski's second trip to the Olympics. He won a silver medal with the team in the 2010 Olympic Games held in Vancouver.

This will also be the third straight Olympics with a former Black Hawk skating on the hockey team -- Jason Blake participated in the 2006 games in Italy.

Pavelski joins Paul Johnson as the only other former Black Hawk to appear in the Olympics twice.

Johnson was on the 1960 and 1964 teams. Former Black Hawks Charlie Brown and Peter Ferraro each played in one Olympiad.

Pavelski joins David Backes, Dustin Brown, Ryan Callahan, Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel, T.J. Oshie, Max Pacioretty, Zach Parise, Paul Stastny, Derek Stepan, James van Riemsdyk, Blake Wheeler, John Carlson, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Paul Martin, Ryan McDonagh, Brooks Orpik, Kevin Shattenkirk, Ryan Suter, Jonathan Quick, Ryan Miller and Jimmy Howard on the 2014 roster.
