Most Westdale Mall tenants being asked to leave

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Many shop owners at Westdale Mall have learned they must move out in a few months. The Frew Development Group gave tenants notices on December 31, 2013. All specialty shops must close by March 31, 2014. This does not effect the mall's anchor stores, JCPenney and Younkers. Those two stores will remain open.

The Frew Development Group is working on a multi-million dollar redevelopment of the mall. This process includes demolishing about 55% of the mall and leaving just the anchor stores. In recent months developers had been working with current tenants on securing a spot in the new building. Owners believed a spot would be available to them inside the old Von Maur structure. However, the company has decided to close what it calls the "specialty tenant area" of the mall on March 31.

In a statement to KWWL, President and CEO John Frew said in part, "This portion of Westdale Mall has served the public well for 34 years, but many large-scale repairs have been neglected for decades and this decision is in everyone’s best interest. We intend to demolish this portion of the mall along with the building most recently leased by Linn County."

Some large tenants have moved out of Westdale in the past two years including the Cedar Rapids Public Library and Linn County, both of which operated out of the mall following the 2008 flood.
