Busy cab drivers keeping safety in mind following robbery

Posted: Updated:

Michael Lane usually works doing construction but to make some money this winter he decided to join Pink's Taxi as a driver---a job he finds to be pretty safe.

"A couple of times I've had some drunks leaning on me but none real threatening," said Lane.

He was worried when he learned a fellow cab driver was injured and robbed while working early Tuesday on the 900 block of Hudson Avenue in Iowa City. Police say this newest robbery is unrelated to the string of cab robberies earlier this year, however, it serves as a reminder to be alert.

"They need to be on guard," said Sgt. Vicki Lalla with the Iowa City Police Department.

Police recommend basic safety tips for anyone out late this New Year's eve---including cab drivers. Pay attention to what's around you and don't be distracted by your phone or radio. They say if you just aren't comfortable---leave.

"Getting hurt isn't worth the fair that they might lose by not picking up somebody," said Lalla.

As for Lane, he'll still be behind the wheel of his cab for the New Year's holiday.

"This is our moneymaker tonight," said Lane.

He'll just be sure to keep safety in mind.
