Still time to donate and receive 2013 tax deductions

As the new year is right around the corner, many of us are spending our time reflecting on the past and preparing for the future. In preparing, some of us may get ride of some of our old items.

But those old items could save you some tax dollars if you make a charitable donation to a nonprofit.

Those charitable donations need to be made to a nonprofit soon, as the deadline to get a tax deduction for 2013 is Tuesday.

Mary Powers lives in East Dubuque, Ill. She says she liked to donate to charities whenever she can.

"I'm just donating some clothing, some toys, and some frames that I have no use for anymore," Powers said at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store on Iowa Street in Dubuque.

After Powers donates her items, she says she likes to get a receipt for her donations.

St. Vincent de Paul store manager Lance Butler says those receipts will help save some of your tax dollars.

"When people come in, it is an incentive for them to donate," Butler said Monday morning.

For every donation, St. Vincent de Paul offers donors a receipt. The receipt lists articles you donate, like clothing or furniture, the amount donated and the donations' estimated value.

Butler says employees can help estimate the value of each donation if needed.

"As many times as you donate, you will get a receipt." Butler said. "You can come in five times a day and get five receipts."

Through those receipts, your good will will be tax-deductible.

Butler says St. Vincent de Paul stores a second copy of each donation receipt created.

Some charities, including St. Vincent de Paul and Goodwill, do not accept donations such as televisions. In Dubuque, those televisions and computers can be taken to the Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency. Those televisions and computers will then be recycled.
