Sewer blockage dumped waste into Mississippi River in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a sewer blockage caused untreated waste water to get into the Mississippi River this weekend.

The plugged sewer pipe was in the 500 block of Samuel Street in Dubuque.

The untreated wastewater flowed into a nearby storm sewer and into the Mississippi River Saturday morning.

DNR officials say the city cleared the blockage, caused by tree roots, and cleaned the area within 45 minutes of finding out about the problem.

The impacted area is now safe.
