Musical variety show in Cascade highlights local musicians

CASCADE (KWWL) -

A successful grassroots fundraising effort is a sign of eastern Iowa's growing music scene.

Sunday, local musicians gathered in Cascade's Ellen Kennedy Fine Arts Center to showcase their talents and help raise money for the community's Rockin' on the River concert series.

About five years ago, a group started a campaign to build an amphitheater in the city's Riverview Park. That was completed in 2011, and organizers, such as Karla Manternach, say it's been a wonderful addition.

"It's everybody's amphitheater," Manternach said. "It was all built on donations and grants. We did receive a grant from the city and we built some really nice bathroom facilities, and we have the stage and the music we get. It's a community event. It's like a big family reunion."

Donations collected at Sunday's Rockin' Musical Variety Show will go toward bringing bigger bands into the Rockin' on the River concert series, Manternach said.
