Movie theaters popping for Christmas Day

Christmas Day is one of the busiest days for movie theaters and a family tradition for many.

Hundreds turned out at the Cedar Rapids 16 Cine to catch a flick and catch up with family.

Anna Wilcox, general manager for 16 Cine says families absolutely love coming in on Christmas.

"From the second we open those doors until we close our door tonight," said Wilcox. "It's crazy. [Families] love it they absolutely do. It's one of our busiest days of the year, studios know it and they put out great movies like The Wolf of Wall Street, Grudge Match, Justin Bieber, 47 Ronin, and if you haven't seen the Hobbit yet we still have that."

While everyone comes for the movies, it wouldn't be complete without popcorn.

Wilcox says they anticipate to go through more than 1,500 pounds of it.

For Lydia Brown, coming to the movies was an obvious choice.

She says her family started coming a few years ago, and every year it gets more crowded.

"It just surprising," said Brown. "Every year it gets more crowded and I guess everyone has the same idea that we do. It a great way to spend time with your family and do something that you don't really have time to do together very often."

She says her children are in high school and college so it's hard to get everyone together in one place.

"It's a tradition we started a few years ago, we open presents, we have brunch, we clean up and then we come to the movies," said Brown. "It really gives us something fun to do together. We don't have family in town so it gives us something to kind of look forward to after we open gifts."

It was all hands on deck for movie staff.

While it seems like working on Christmas can be a downer, movie staff think other wise.

They say working at 16 Cine is a family environment. They arrange their own personal family time around their work schedule, to help others with their traditional family time.
