Iowa City burglar leaves debit card at scene of crime

Police have charged an Iowa City man with a home burglary after finding his debit card at the crime scene.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports ( ) the burglary occurred Sunday, when someone kicked in a door and took a safe from a bedroom.

The safe contained about $2,000, a U.S. passport, digital camera and other items.

During the investigation, police found a debit card belonging to 20-year-old Carloss D. Sanders in the house. Police also found a shoe print with a distinctive sole mark stating "Route 66."

Police went to Sanders home and found a shoe that matched the print.

Sanders was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree theft and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

He was held in the Johnson County Jail.

A lawyer for Sanders wasn't listed on online court records.
