Weekend snow make for tough holiday travel

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

With this being the weekend before Christmas, many were hitting the roads to visit family and friends, but the winter weather didn't yield to holiday travelers.

The roads across eastern Iowa didn't get messy until late Saturday night heading into Sunday morning.

Bryan Stolz, general manager at the Coralville Marriott, says they've had about two dozen guests stay an extra night, or checked in late Saturday night to avoid driving along I-380 and I-80 during the storm.

"We had about 20-30 customers that had difficulty getting out earlier in the morning like they had planned and we've also had some reservations coming in that had difficulty getting in, so it's kind of been a balance in today's occupancy," said Stolz

He says says his staff put in extra hours to make sure the hotel was clear and safe for their guests.

Staff at the Eastern Iowa Airport were also busy making sure the runways for planes coming into Cedar Rapids were as smooth as possible.

The airport scheduled extra maintenance workers to clear the landing for pilots and passengers to arrive safely.

There were delays and some cancellations, but travelers say, it's expected.

"A couple of hours, 2-3 hour delay in Chicago to get here today, but the flight was fantastic," said Michael Kenny from Australia.
