Mary McGee transforms Gilbertville garden area into light display for Christmas

GILBERTVILLE (KWWL) -

Mary McGee spends a lot of time at the entrance to the town of Gilbertville. Each spring she plants flowers, and this time of year she decorates the brown, snow covered area for Christmas.

McGee said the garden project originally started through a Visioning Committee to help beautify the town. Now, she volunteers her time to maintain the garden area year-round.

"Someone said you better quit doing that because I'm going to have an accident going around that corner seeing what you're doing (laughing)," said Mary McGee.

For Christmas, Mary McGee puts up lights and simply tries to make the entrance into town more festive. Most everything she uses to decorate is donated by people in Gilbertville, including the nativity scene that's new this year.

"Sometimes you ask and you receive," said McGee.

Putting out the lights and decorations requires some planning. The only electrical outlets are on the post to the welcome sign.

"Everything has to come around and hit the back of the sign, and it always does," said McGee.

McGee loves gardening, but she said she mostly sticks with it because people enjoy seeing it throughout the year.

"As they come in they say gosh your garden looks so nice or your lights look so great. I guess that's what keeps you going," said Mary McGee. Everyone in Gilbertville knows this spot is cared for by Mary McGee.

McGee works part-time at city hall, and she volunteers for numerous groups in town.
