Police: Shoplifter pulls gun on employees at Paul's Discount in Iowa City

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

A man police say shoplifted at Paul's Discount is also accused of pulling a gun on employees.

Iowa City police were called to Paul's Discount at 424 Highway 1 West in Iowa City around 8:10 p.m. Saturday for a report of an uncooperative shoplifter.

While responding, officers learned that the man, who was armed with a gun and a knife, had pointed the gun at employees and then ran from the store.

Officers say they were able to take the man into custody in front of 161 Highway 1 West. They say they found a knife and a loaded gun. 

The man is identified as 38-year-old Randall Eugene Mairet of Batavia.  He is charged with first degree robbery, going armed with intent, dominion or control of firearm by domestic abuse offender, carrying weapons and aggravated theft.

The incident remains under investigation.
