UPDATE: Stolen trailer found, wheelchairs still missing

A stolen trailer that once held wheelchairs was found in Newhall on Tuesday morning, but the wheelchairs were still missing.

SportAbility of Iowa, a group dedicated to providing recreation to people with physical disabilities, reported that the trailer was stolen from the Stoney Point YMCA parking lot in Cedar Rapids over the weekend.

The trailer was used to store and transport their 10-12 wheelchairs for a wheelchair basketball team.

Miss Wheelchair Iowa Tasha DeGroote says it's her goal to make adaptive sports well-known. She says not having those wheelchairs is a blow to SportAbility of Iowa.

"To me personally, you know this really sets back my personal goals to get adaptive sports recognized," said DeGroote.

DeGroote is on the SportAbility of Iowa board and on the basketball team whom uses the wheelchairs. She says while their basketball team, the Iowa Chariots, will feel the loss, it's about more than just the chairs.

"Just because we're in wheelchairs or just because we have challenges we face everyday doesn't mean that we can't still play the sports that everybody else can," said DeGroote.

Each wheelchair costs about $4,000.

Cedar Rapids Police say the trailer was found in Newhall Tuesday morning, but the wheelchairs are still missing.

SportAbility of Iowa plans to hold fundraisers to buy new chairs, but they are always looking for donations.
