Waterloo students sell bracelets for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Glow-in-the-dark bracelets are for sale at Central Middle School in Waterloo.

Seventh grade students in Trent Duniven's homeroom began selling the bracelets in November to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"It's been great. When you walk down the hallways almost every student has a wristband on," said teacher Trent Duniven.

The students chose to donate to St. Jude in memory of a classmate, Oliver Palmer, who died from an inoperable brain tumor in February 2012.

"We've all been affected by this, so we all wanted to help the cause and everything," said student Nicholas Heinz.

The class of about 15 students designed and ordered the Central Chargers bracelets through a website.

"The students have done everything. I've literally stood back and watched them take over. They've written letters to St. Jude. Being 12 years old and to say they've raised more than $600 to an organization like this, it's good to see from 12-year-olds," said Duniven.

The students have sold the bracelets during lunch, at concerts, and at sporting events. They hope to raise $1,000.

"It's for a good cause. Helping out a lot of people. If she got cancer, I know I'd be getting all of my money and giving it to St. Jude because I'd want my best friend to get better," said students Quita Jackson and Rachel Price.

The seventh graders even inspired other classes in the school to give back, organizing a book drive and donations for Toys for Tots.

"It's makes me feel like a role model to others. They want to do something I started like a good trend," said Jackson.

As an added incentive, Trent Duniven told students he'll dye his hair pink if they reach the $1,000 goal.

The bracelets are $3 for adults and $2 for students.

If you'd like to purchase a bracelet or make a donation to the cause, contact the office at Central Middle School. That number is 319-433-2100.
