UPDATE: Gold coin placed in Salvation Army kettle in Cedar Falls turns out to be copy

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - The Salvation Army says a gold coin placed in a kettle in Cedar Falls is not what they originally thought it was.

On Thursday, Sue Henning with the Salvation Army in Waterloo, called KWWL to report that someone placed a gold coin in one of the kettles outside a Hy-Vee store in Cedar Falls.

Henning called back on Friday morning to tell us that the coin turned out to be a copy of an 1849 $20 gold coin that actually has no value.

While the Salvation Army is disappointed that this one turned out to be real, they are thankful that people are still donating. Henning says they are at 57% of their goal.

Last year, the Salvation Army says they collected 12 gold coins collected throughout the month of December.
