Rockford bridge over Shell Rock River reopens

More than eight months after bridge construction split the northern Iowa city of Rockford in two, a new span over the Shell Rock River has opened.

The bridge opened to traffic Monday morning, allowing motorists to quickly drive across town for the first time since April 1. For months, residents have had to take a long detour to travel from one side of the city to the other.

The new bridge cost about $1.5 million, with most of that covered by a federal grant.

It replaces a bridge build in the 1920s that was deemed deficient due to its age and size.

Some work remains to be completed, including signage, line striping and landscaping.

A formal dedication will be held in the spring.
