CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -
The Cedar Falls City Council voted to reduce the hours of a major bus route Monday night.
Route 9 connects most of Cedar Falls. Without it, passengers have previously told KWWL that they wouldn't be able to get to work.
The council reduced the operation time of the route from 71 hours per week to 50, effective until they renegotiate the route for the next fiscal year. They also voted to stop providing free rides to University of Northern Iowa students. Now, they will ask students -- who previously rode for free -- to pay the reduced student rate.
A representative of the Waterloo - Cedar Falls Metropolitan Transit Authority, which operates the city buses, said they would decide how best to utilize the limited hours throughout the week.
