Landlords Speak Out Against New Ordinance Proposal

A number of Waterloo landlords came to the city council meeting Monday night to speak out against what could become a proposed ordinance.

Some landlords do not agree with the crime-free agenda in the proposal.
It's an agreement in a lease saying if a tenant breaks the law they can be evicted.

However if the landlord does not have that agreement on file they can be fined, which landlords say is not fair.

"We're trying to make sure it's fair to everybody and the biggest thing that they're not keeping fair is they are holding the landlords accountable for the actions of the tenant."  Said Mark Pregler, the Vice President of the Black Hawk County Landlords Association.  "That's a lack of due process, you can't fine me because somebody else broke the law.

The council decided not to take any action Monday and will push the proposal back to the January 15th  meeting before reaching a decision.
