Ireton woman pulls 7 children from van filled with smoke

SIOUX CENTER (AP) -

A northwest Iowa baby sitter says she prayed to God as she rescued seven children from a van that filled with smoke and erupted into flames.

Tara Dekkers, who runs a day care from her home, was driving a 15-passenger van filled with children Friday afternoon near Sioux Center when she heard a pop. The vehicle became filled with smoke and she pulled over.

The 36-year-old Dekkers, of Ireton, quickly unloaded the kids, who ranged in age from 1 to 6, with the help of a good Samaritan. Shortly after, the van became engulfed. No injuries were reported.

The Sioux County Sheriff's Office says a mechanical failure appears to have caused the fire.

Dekkers says she doesn't consider herself a hero because she did what anyone else would do.
