Korean student finds comfort in working at Cookies by Design

Joan Kim is a cake decorator at Cookies by Design in Coralville.

She's from South Korea and an art student at the University of Iowa. She works, studies, and even takes care of her little sister.

"Actually I feel like she thinks of me like a mom," says Kim. "Sometimes that's kind of tough for me because I can't really take care of her in everything."

She says sometimes it's tough taking care of her sister while their mom and dad are still working in Korea, but she says working at Cookies by Design keeps her going.

"I can't really wait until work, that's for true," says Kim. "I really love decorating, and if I had more time, I would love to work more, but with studying i cant work as much as I want."

Judy and Dan Schwartz, owners of Cookies by Design, say they love helping their employees.

They've been open for about three years, but they say it's more than just a business, it's a bond.

"Each day when Joan comes in always happy always," says owner, Judy Schwartz. "It's enlightening I look forward to her coming in, I wish it was every day."

Schwartz used to be a teacher and that's what helps her reach out.

The business present a "Shine Award" where they recognize 5-10 of the best teachers in the area.

They're also considering "The Smart Cookie" award to honor scholastic excellence with area students.

Kim says Judy and Dan has helped her with problems at school and in her personal life.

With her parents a world away, she says having Judy and Dan, makes that world a little bit closer.

"My mom is all the way in Korea so she cant really 100 percent understand what's going on in america, but Judy she knows the situation and stuff so she helps me a lot with that," said Kim.

She says working with the couple allows her to feel comfortable and she's able to trust them.
