DUBUQUE (KWWL) -
The Dubuque Regional Humane Society is closing its Kennedy Mall location to focus on its larger space.
The DRHS's lease there is up at the end of the year, and leaders have decided not to renew.
DRHS president and CEO Maria Benham said the mall location, opened in 2007, was meant to give animals more visibility.
However, the DHRS moved this fall into a larger and renovated space in Dubuque's Industrial Center West, called Kinsey's Campus Animal Resource Center, so Benham said visibility is no longer a problem.
"(People) can come out, still visit the animals, still visit our retail center and see us out at Kinsey's Campus," Benham said. "This is not only a better place for our animals to be, but also a better place for people to come and see our animals."
More than 5,000 animals have been adopted through the Kennedy Mall location, Benham said, though she added the number of critters out at the mall at any given time represents just a sliver of all the animals in the DRHS's care.
"We are proud of the work accomplished through our mall location, but now our attention is focused on Kinsey's Campus and bringing all our animals and staff together under one roof," Benham said.
The DRHS's new Kinsey's Campus Animal Resource Center is located at 4242 Chavenelle Road, near the Northwest Arterial.
