CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Cedar Falls was awarded a $50,000 grant to help encourage children to be active.

The Wellmark Foundation gave the city money for a three year project to fight childhood obesity.

The initiative hopes to get more kids to walk to school by closing sidewalk gaps and adding crosswalks.

"The main part of the grant is to focus with a partnership with the University of Northern Iowa and the Blue Zones to help complete a lot of those initiatives." PEP Grant Program Director of Cedar Falls Community Schools Troy Becker said.

Becker says the grant will also help buy new equipment and supplies for the schools' physical education program as well as help with the schools' curriculum.

Cedar Falls was competing with more than 90 applicants for the grant money
