Giving Tuesday comes after the weekend shopping frenzy

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Black Friday, Cyber Monday… now it's time for Giving Tuesday, a global initiative to encourage people to think of someone else amidst holiday shopping chaos.

The theme is meant to make people slow down and think of ways in which to give; helping local charities, non-profit organizations or simply an individual.

"That's how we feel here at the Salvation Army. We are so blessed that we can help the people who come to us with their special needs and we can only do that because people in this community give to us," said Development Director Sue Hennings.

The Salvation Army in Waterloo is at roughly 40 percent of its holiday donation goal. Hennings said she would love to see toys come through the doors on Giving Tuesday. She said it's not the monetary value that matters, but rather the person on the receiving end.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank also looks forward to Giving Tuesday. Executive Director Barb Prather said people can give to the food bank in three primary ways:

"Monetary donations where for every dollar we can help provide five meals, non-perishable food items, or even perishable in the summer we do take perishable items as well and then the other way is to give volunteer time," Prather said.

One can even give a home. The Cedar Bend Humane Society currently has 159 animals up for adoption, 80 percent of which are cats. Adoption Supervisor Caitlyn Evans said it's one of the highest numbers the society has seen for this time of year.

"Right now with how many cats we have - cat food, hard and wet, is the biggest thing we are running out of right now, monetary donations help," Evans said.

Evans also said they welcome office supplies, cleaning supplies and other household items as donations.

The initiative has a strong social media push, encouraging people to post how they give on Giving Tuesday's Facebook page. For Twitter users - #GivingTuesday can be used to share the spirit.
