Construction begins on home for Independence family

Posted: Updated:
INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) - One eastern Iowa family is getting a new handicap accessible home from the "Building a Dream" committee.

Sue Spece and her family had previously been nominated for "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" when the show came to Iowa, but a family from West Union received the home instead.

Community members in the town of Independence gathered together and formed a new group, "Building a Dream in the Country: A New Home for the Spece Family," and after two years of fundraising, they broke ground on Dec. 2 for the new home.

Sue lives in Independence with her four adult children, all of whom have physical disabilities.

When the house is finished, it will have a ceiling-mounted lift system, tornado room, voice-activated features and much more.

For more on the family and house and to donate to the organization, check out their website here.
