Toys for Tots donations total thousands of toys for children

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Thousands of toys are currently calling a Dubuque warehouse home.

Those toys are being stored in a warehouse in Dubuque's Industrial Park before being given to thousands of children in the tri-state area.

Toys for Tots was started by the Marine Corps as a way to collect new, unwrapped toys each year to be distributed as holiday gifts to less fortunate children in the community.

Bryce Parks is the Toys for Tots coordinator for Dubuque County, Grant County and Jo Daviess County. He says Toys for Tots has been collecting toys in these counties for years.

"It's a big deal for families to really get to relieve that stress during the holiday season," Parks said. "You want to provide for your kid, and how do you explain to your kid that you just can't afford toys this time of year?"

Parks says this year toys will be given to about 5,000 children in those counties.

"It's a trust thing with the parents and the kids," he said. "So you want to have the parents feel like they are providing and the kids feel like they can always turn to there parents. I think we alleviate that stress at Christmas and allow them to focus on the happy."

Parks said donations wrap up around Dec. 15, but he will continue to accept donations after that point. He says those donations will just be stored and used the next year.
