Small Business Saturday thriving in Tipton

TIPTON (KWWL) -

Black Friday has come and gone, and many small businesses were overshadowed by the big retailers.

However, some local shops in Tipton say Small Business Saturday is all they need.

The day is dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country, and Tipton hosted its first-ever Small Business Saturday event.

Area residents could take full advantage of the unique deals and activities they have to offer.

Local business owners say the relationships with their community is the backbone to their business.

"We are not going to make a million dollars -- that is not the goal," said Cheryl Fisher, owner of Wild Angels Expressions. "The goal is to do something we believe is a win-win situation for the community."

Business owners in Tipton say they love giving back, something big retailers just can't.

Tiffiny Meinert has been running Tiffiny's Tipton Bakery for just over a year, but the original owners opened it back in 1928.

She says traditions and customers' support keep her bakery thriving.

"The people -- hearing the stories about when they came in with their grandparents and got crescents when they were little," says Meinert. "I love that the most."

Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 as a simple way to remind communities of the unique deals and traditions the local mom-and-pop stores have to offer.

"The importance of shopping local in small towns like Tipton is the money that is spent locally is kept in the local economy," said Tipton's economic development director Abby Kisling.

In 2011, the U.S. Senate officially recognized Small Business Saturday. Last year, millions of shoppers participated nationwide.

"All of my customers come from the local area," said Fisher. "I do very little advertising -- it's all word of mouth, and they're our backbone."
