Makeup donations needed for Cedar Valley Friends of the Family

Sarah Thompson started her own makeup business earlier this year. The stay-at-home mom spent three months going to school and training. Now, she does makeup for weddings, proms, and photo sessions.

"People have been so generous with me with starting this business that I wanted to give back to women who could use it," said Sarah Thompson.

That's why she's organizing a makeup drive for Cedar Valley Friends of the Family, based in Waverly. It provides safe shelter to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Last year, Cedar Valley Friends of the Family served more than 200 people in three counties. This year, the nonprofit is serving 14 counties.

"A lot of times our clients are going through tough times. They're facing big decisions in front of them. Maybe doing something for themselves they haven't done before. This is a nice, little extra for them as they learn to be independent and confident again," said Casey Herkelman with Cedar Valley Friends of the Family.

"I just want them to feel good about themselves. So many people probably put them down in a lot of situations that this is a time for them to take ownership of themselves and say I'm worth it," said Thompson.

Throughout the month of December, you're asked to drop off makeup at three locations in Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and Waverly.

Sarah Thompson said she's looking for natural, every day makeup. That includes lipstick, eye shadow, and mascara.

"To make you feel the best version of yourself. You don't have to cake on your makeup. Just feel good about yourself and it lets you hold your head up a little bit higher, put your shoulders back a little bit, and walk out your door with a little bit more confidence," said Sarah Thompson.

Thompson is also accepting monetary donations so she can purchase makeup. Her plan is to meet with the women in January to give them the makeup, and to show them how to apply it.

"I think it can help build self-esteem and confidence level, and it can make it soar," said Thompson.

Sarah Thompson hopes this make-up drive is just what a lot of the women need to start the new year off on a positive note.
