Santa trades sleigh for Fenelon Place Elevator in Dubuque visit


The cold weather Friday evening did not keep many from heading to Cable Car Square in downtown Dubuque. On Friday evening, Cable Car Square in downtown Dubuque was lined with a thousand luminaries. Those luminaries were used to guide Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus through Cable Car Square.

At 6 p.m. Friday evening, the couple rode down the Fenelon Place Elevator and were greeted by hundreds of people. It was all apart of the 37th annual Cable Car Square Christmas Candlewalk.

This year, the Candlewalk featured a cookie decoration table as well as a meet and greet with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Connie Twining is co-owner of Outside the Lines Art Gallery. She says the Candlewalk is something many of the bluff street businesses help put together.

"It's an opportunity to get thanksgiving behind us and to look forward to that season, that Christmas season in a way that is not hurried or rushed. It's exciting and electric." Twining said.

The event also serves as a way to check out locally owned businesses along Bluff Street and in Cable Car Square.

Ellen Liberg is the owner of Fig Leaf in Dubuque. Her business recently located to Bluff Street. She says she is excited to be a part of this years Candlewalk.

"I am very excited," Liberg said. "I was outside earlier putting sand in my bags to get my luminaries out. It's going to be a lot of fun."

Liberg says she hopes the Candlewalk also allows people to visit her shops new location.

"I know that the families always have a hard time when kids are with them, but children are always welcome. I never mind having kids come into the store." Liberg said.

The event also featured Fenelon Place Elevator rides for the public.
