Early shoppers brave cold weather to take advantage of tempting deals

The cold weather is not stopping many eastern Iowans from standing in lines Thursday to take advantage of tempting Black Friday deals.  On Thursday, Dubuque's Kmart opened at 6 a.m. Scott Matuszak is the manager of Dubuque's Kmart. He says the store has been open on Thanksgiving day for more than 20 years.

"We have had really big crowds all day. We really spread out the door busters to keep the crowds going. It's been a really big success here." Matuszak said.

Matuszak says this year, Dubuque's Kmart will be open straight through Black Friday until 11 p.m.

"We looked at it last year, we closed after a couple of door busters and the company wanted to keep it open and keep people coming in." Matuszak said.

It's door busters that keep shoppers like Jacob Bumphrey sitting out in the cold weather Thursday afternoon. Bumphrey began waiting in line at best buy in Dubuque at 1 p.m. He was the first person in line, waiting for the store to open at 6 p.m.

"I'm out here to get some deals," Bumphrey said. "It's kind of like deer hunting taking weather in for the cold, there is usually a big prize waiting for you at the end. So that's what we are out here for the big prize."

This year, he was waiting in line to get a couple of T.V.'s and maybe a tablet.

But while some brave the cold weather to take advantage of deals, others head to the theaters. Steve Thompson is co-owner of Mindframe Theaters in Dubuque. He says Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest weekends for Mindframe Theaters as many people make going to a movie a family tradition for the holiday.

"It's always been that there is the shoppers and the moviegoers," Thompson said laughing. "The shoppers, we have never had them, they are just intent and focused and our people are those people who say 'no way that I am doing that I am going to a movie.'"
