Dubuque's Reflections in the Park still shining bright for 19th year

Thousands of lights will light up Louis Murphy Park in Dubuque beginning Thursday. It's a part of "Reflections in the Park: A Hillcrest Lights Festival" in Dubuque. This is the 19th year for the annual light festival. The festival allows people to drive around and through different light displays at Murphy Park in Dubuque.

This year 60 different light structures will be on display throughout the park and for the first year ever, all of those structures are using L.E.D. lights.

Sondra Bennett is the Reflections in the Park coordinator for Hillcrest Family Services. She says Reflections in the Park brings thousands of visitors to Dubuque every year.

"People who are traveling from one destination to another going through Dubuque make it a family tradition to stop and go through the park. It's just a feel good event that everyone enjoys and celebrates."

Bennett says last year more than 50,000 visitors came out to see Reflections in the Park.

"Last year we were open 41 days because Thanksgiving was early," Bennett said. "This year, Thanksgiving is the latest it can be so we will be open 35 days. So we had a few more nights open last year."

All proceeds are made through Reflections in the Park benefit Hillcrest Family Services. That money will be put toward programs that do not have solid financial support.

"Several of our programs are not self-supporting due to the nature of them," Bennett said. "But they are very needed, so Reflections in the Park definitely helps to support those as well as our other programs."

Bennett says during the past 18 years of the event, more than a million dollars has been raised for Hillcrest.

Reflections in the Park runs daily at Louis Murphy Park in Dubuque beginning November 28th thru January 1st. The cost is $8.00 per vehicle.
