Joyful holidays... or stressful holidays?

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Tuesday, Nov. 26 keeps Thanksgiving only two days away and Christmas peeking around the corner.

Cooking, shopping, preparing, gathering - all things associated with the holiday season. Some even characterize it as...

"Overwhelming... You have to prepare the meal, have to buy the turkey," said shopper Mary Ann Stock.

Social workers at People's Community Health Clinic in Waterloo said the holidays may bring delicious food and decor, but that's not it.

"Even for people that have the best of life going on for them right now - the hecticness of the season just compounds what's supposed to be fun, joyful, thankful," said Social Worker Lynn Neill.

She said this time of year can often be pretty stressful for folks. To combat all the scurrying around, Neill offers a few pieces of advice:

  • Plan ahead - whether it's stretching out the shopping or the cost of items.
  • Contribute to gatherings - have people bring food or have a joint meal, removing the responsibility off of one person.
  • Make time for yourself - deep breaths and slow down!
  • Stop striving for a "picturesque" holiday - no event is perfect.

Neill also advises to remember to enjoy the holiday, what ever it may be, and the meaning for which it stands.

"Have some fun! We have to just keep having an upbeat look. Oh, this may be a long five weeks from now until Christmas, hopefully you won't think of it that way, but we have to enjoy the pieces we're doing."
