Benton Community HS band to play in Chicago Thanksgiving Parade

Posted: Updated:

The Benton Community Marching Bobcats head to the windy city Monday morning for the 2013 Chicago Thanksgiving Parade.

The Bobcats have the honor of representing the state, as they are the only Iowa school band in this year's parade. This is the second time the Benton Community High School band will march in the parade in four years; the first trip was in 2010.

The crew has been gearing up for its debut for several weeks, braving the chilly mornings to prepare for Chicago weather.

"The average temperature in Chicago for Thanksgiving is around 44 degrees but this year the forecast right now is calling for 28 degrees," said Scott Weber, Director of Bands.

77 students head to Chicago this year, including freshmen all the way up to seniors.

"We've pretty much been waiting for this day since the beginning of marching band season so it's finally here and we're all excited to go, it's going to be great," student Matthew Gerhold said.

‘Twas the Parade Before Christmas is the song to be played this year; Drum Major Tanner Brecht describes it as a melody of many different Christmas songs.

The band is scheduled to leave around 10 a.m. Monday. The trip is a few days longer this year to give students time to tour Chicago and sight see before the holiday.

The parade will be broadcast live on WGN America from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thanksgiving morning.
