Iowa City Police: Winter could be an open invitation to car thieves

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Police say cold temperatures could make some people more susceptible to having their car stolen.

During winter, many start their vehicles, crank on the heat and go back inside, but police say that could be an open invitation for a thief to steal your car.

Iowa City police say it's definitely something to keep in mind.

"The biggest thing people have to be aware of is that if you leave a car running, especially if it's unlocked, it is going to be something potentially someone will want to take," says Lieutenant Bill Campbell with Iowa City police. "Whether they take it a long way or just around the block, it can disappear and it does happen."

Campbell says the law does not allow you to park your car on the street when it's running unless the parking break is set.

He says it's always important to lock your doors, have a second set of keys and never leave your car unattended longer than you have to.
