Brewery helps Solon's economic growth

Leaders of one eastern Iowa town say their city is getting an economic boost thanks to a new microbrewery.

Big Grove Brewery is located right in the heart of Solon, on the corner of Iowa and Main Streets.

Guests have come from as far as the Quad Cities to taste the food and beer the brewery has to offer.

"Solon was one of their focuses and it was really perfect timing," says Solon mayor, Cami Rassmussen. She goes on to say for the last five years, the city has seen an increase in population and economic growth.

Although Big Grove has only been open three months the brewery, Rassmussen says it's helped with the city's economic development.

"Solon's a growing community, great access to Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, it's kind of a bed room community," says restaurant managing partner Doug Goettsch.

"It's a buzzing main street and we hope that's going to continue to overflow into all of the businesses," says Rassmussen. "This business is really a true destination restaurant and brewery. The economic impact of the of a business like the brewery is going to attract people, it's going to attract the bicyclists, the snow mobilers. The buzz it's created just because of the reputation of the owners."

Goettsch says when he first wrote the menu,  his whole ideas was to create one that was very approachable.

Most of the produce Big Grove Restaurant and Brewery uses is locally grown.

Owners say the location is perfect and it's staff bring prestigious credentials to eastern Iowa.

"We're not building a destination restaurant, but it might turn out to be a destination restaurant and it has," said Goettsch.
