Hundreds dine-in for a free annual Thanksgiving dinner in Cedar Rapids

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of people in the Cedar Rapids area got an early Thanksgiving dinner Saturday.

The traditional Thanksgiving meal at the HD Youth Center started more than 10 years ago, and has grown every year since then.

"I discovered a lot of people are hungry especially when it comes to these holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas," says founder Henry Davison. "So everybody don't have a farm, everybody don't have money to buy a turkey, so I said I can help them out."

Davison said when the center first hosted the dinner, there were only about 60 people taking part.

This year, more than 200 people dined on the traditional turkey dinner.
