Iowa City 4th graders collect 1,200 coats for those in need

A group of Iowa City 4th graders are helping others stay warm this winter.
The students from Longfellow Elementary have collected more than 1,000 coats, hats and snow pants as part of the school's annual coats for kindness giveaway.
The group of 24 students collected the winter gear for the past six weeks.
Saturday, they distributed the items to families in need.
"They walk their neighborhood, they search their closets, we actually had three other schools on board this year from Iowa City that helped us in this endeavor to collect the items and they wash them, the sort them the write little letters inside each of the pockets," says Longfellow teacher Paula Rocca.
Rocca says within the first 15 minutes all the coats were gone.
She says this project is a lesson she can't teach out of a textbook.
