IOWA CITY (KWWL) -
Like many retailers, Active Endeavors in Downtown Iowa City does about 40% of its yearly sales around the holidays.
"It's a great time of year and we're all just excited to showcase what we have and have people come down and support local business and support small business," said Mark Weaver, owner of Active Endeavors.
If you shop at his store, some of the money you spend will help those in need. Active Endeavors is one of 50 businesses participating in the Iowa City Downtown District's Giving Book
"It's always a good time to give back," said Weaver.
"All these small businesses support what's going on down here through hiring people, through giving back," said Betsy Potter, Operations Director for the Iowa City Downtown District.
For every item you purchase out of the book, stores will donate money to the United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties. The organization says this is really a shot in the arm for them at the time where people need help the most.
"Need during the holiday season increases, actually-especially in Iowa because the weather gets worse," said Dan Brown, Director of Annual Giving for the United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties.
The campaign kicks off on November 30th, which is Small Business Saturday, a day devoted to encouraging people to shop local like the places in the book. To help get people into downtown stores, the city is offering free parking from Thanksgiving through Small Business Saturday.
The University of Iowa Community Credit Union will match all donations up to $5,000. Organizers hope to raise at least $10,000 during the nine day campaign.
You can pick up a copy of the book at several Iowa City locations and many will be delivered to home. To see a digital version click here.
