WATERLOO (KWWL) -
National Adoption Day is November 23, but Eastern Iowa residents started the party a day early.
Six families made their adoptions official at the Black Hawk County Courthouse.
Adoptions were finalized during court proceedings, then families were treated to a celebratory reception. The event serves as a positive way to cap off what is often a long, expensive and emotional process.
As of August 2013, about 622 children were eligible for adoption in Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Human Services.
Nationally, approximately 101,000 kids are awaiting adoption from foster care. Over the weekend, some 4,500 children will have their adoptions from foster care finalized.
