Benton Community HS students honor JFK

VAN HORNE (KWWL) -

Freshman History teacher Howard Conrad said the 50th anniversary of the John F. Kennedy assassination landed in the week his class learns about the 1960s.

He assigned his students a special project – interview someone who was alive at the time of the assassination and who still remembers the event.

He said his students found those they interviewed recall the incident quite well.

"I interviewed my grandpa," said Colin Hurley, a freshman. "He was hunting with his college friends and so he didn't even know it actually happened until he was on his way back to Iowa State."

"My grandma was really shocked," said Hannah Brecht, a freshman. "Then she was glued to the TV, she said, because she couldn't believe what was happening."

Conrad also remembers Kennedy's death in vivid detail.

"I was in the sixth grade when Kennedy got shot," he said. "And I can remember it was a day when we didn't have TVs in the classroom, and there was a TV with rabbit ears on the stage, on the gym stage, and we went down there and closed the curtains so the light couldn't get in.

"The news, the TV, informed us of Kennedy," Conrad added.

He said he describes Kennedy to his students in the sense of a family man that imprinted on the American people.

"What amazes me is that he had quotes that we still remember today," Conrad said. "His quote that, 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country' -- for some reason we still remember that."

Conrad's class spent the entire week of November 18 on the Kennedy administration.

JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, TX.
