Athletes of the Week: Wartburg Women's Cross Country

Posted: Updated:

Success, and winning has become the trade-mark of the Wartburg Women's cross country program --

"These are great gals, they love to run.  They work real hard."

"A lot of it's the hard work that we put in the summer.  A lot of us focused more in on the summer mileage.  I think that was a huge thing."

So far this season -- the Knights have gone undefeated for the first time in school history -- despite running several races without their tops runners Alana Enabnit and Sammi Bruett due to nagging injuries --

neither was in the line-up when the Knights captured their third straight Iowa Conference Title --

"I think it just shows a lot of the depth that our team, just everybody being able to step up when you need it the most."

No matter who you lose we always have people stepping up to the next occasion and I think it shows how strong this program is."

Last weekend -- Wartburg captured the title at the NCAA Central Regional -- and with Both Enabnit and Bruett back in the line-up -- they've got some big goals for this week's national championships --

"I think we very capable of being national champions this year.  We have people that have been here before."

"We are in contention for a trophy and if we put together 7 solid races, we have a shot at a national title."

And as they run against the clock on Saturday -- only time will tell if last year's runner-ups capture a title this time around.
