Cedar Rapids gets HUD grant for equal housing efforts

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -

A government agency in Cedar Rapids has received a federal grant to strengthen its efforts to ensure equal housing opportunities are available to minorities.

The Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission says it has been selected for a $235,000 partnership grant with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The commission says the money will be used to hire a bilingual fair housing investigator and conciliator. It will also be used to expand education and outreach efforts to gay and lesbian communities, Latinos, immigrants and other minority groups.

The commission says it will also host a fair housing conference in Cedar Rapids, along with other local groups.
