Posted: Updated:

The Iowa Corrections Department says a 74-year-old inmate has died at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

The department says Vernon McEndree died Saturday. He'd been diagnosed with atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up inside arteries that carry blood through the body.

McEndree was serving a 40-year sentence for eight counts of sexual abuse in Adams County. His sentence began on May 18 last year.
